Well, I did it. For five consecutive days, completely on my own, I taught elementary school. It was...well... I did it.
It was hard. It was really really hard. My morning students are all 5-6 year olds and have been learning English for a couple years now. They're incredibly smart...sometimes too smart. I spent last week with them so they knew I was coming, but they were still very close to their last teacher (the one I replaced) and the transition was not completely smoothe. There are 11 students in the class and while most of them were fine, there's a couple who definitely made it their goal to test me this week. One in particular, a boy named Chris, was quite belligerent in his attempts to defy me. Refusing to turn the pages in his book to the right page or write down the answers to various worksheets. I had to resort to taking away his breaks and, eventually at the end of the week, asking the Korean staff to call his mother and report his behavior. It was not a fun thing to do (actually it made me feel like an adult...yuck). All the teachers have been urging me to go in to the class with a harder hand. Apparently this group of kindergartners are notorious for being difficult and hard to manage, I guess the previous 2 teachers they've had all had similar problems in the beginning. But it's so hard to go into a class of little kids and just yell at them. The Korean staff has no problem doing it but, then again, corporal punishment is still allowed in Korean schools (though none of us are allowed nor would ever touch the children).
My favorite part of teaching is seeing how quickly minds this young can absorb information. There English is not perfect, but considering they are 6 years old I find it pretty amazing they've learned this much in 2 years (far more than I ever learned after 6 years of french...and I didn't even need to learn a new alphabet!)
My least favorite part is arts and crafts. On the Friday before Halloween, the school celebrated by having both teachers and students dress up and go trick or treating in the hallway (I assembled a pirate costume over the course of 2 days...but the kids loved the parrot glued onto my shoulder so I thought it was successful) Part of the activities was doing face painting. At the time Emily, the teacher I've replaced, was still here and she did most of the face painting while I helped the students with a project. As she was runnign out of time, I helped out with the facepaint of the last two students.
I so don't have mom's talent for painting.
All I had to draw was a pumpkin and a bat. The pumpkin, I thought, would be easy. But there was no orange color and though I tried mixing red and yellow, it came out looking like an apple. The bat looked like one of those blobs that psychologists show to patients and ask them what they see in it. After break, when we came back down, every student that had gotten face paint still had it. Except for the two girls that I had drawn on.
The administrative aspects of the school are somewhat complicated. Since it's a private school that parents are paying a lot of money for, we tend to cater more to the parents than to the students. Our lesson plans and a certain percentage of our homework have to be in color, so that when a homework packet gets sent home at the end of the week, the parents will have something "pretty" to look at. A few months ago one parent called to complain that their child came home hungry so the entire schedule was rearranged to fit snack time directly after lunch to ensure that-though the children may be starving by the time lunch comes around- they get a snack right before they go home so none can complain of hunger to their parents.
I also got to spend the week living in my own apartment! Moving into a studio that is around the size of Kelli's bedroom in Brea was quite exciting for me. It's the first time I've ever lived on my own and while that has already gotten quite lonely, I really love having my own place. It's a cozy little apartment. A metal rod acts as my wardrobe and is located right next to my fridge, which I can't fully open without pushing back the kitchen table. The enclosed balcony acts as both a kitchen and laundry room. The kitchen has one sink and a gas burner in place of a stove, no oven but the kitchen came fully stocked with cooking utensils, silverware, a rice cooker, and a microwave. There's a washer (no drier) that is across from the kitchen. I'm doing laundry right now and after hanging up all my clothes to dry I can already tell that the balcony is going to be a very cramped area. The bathroom is decent, a western style toilet (I was worried about that one...) and a shower head and sink.
Compared to the apartment I spent last week in, this one is exponentially smaller and the furniture is all much, much older. But, the walls are wallpapered and the tile looks new.
And, best of all, there does not appear to be any mosquitoes.

Hi Honey,
Your entry appeared to indicate you have fully morphed into a working adult! Congratulations, and I am sure your students will come to adore you for your unique combination of scorching wit and sweetness just as we do!
I am home, doing laundry and packing for our big trip. It will probably take me all day as you know how many "little" things need to be done - workout clothes, casual clothes that aren't too touristy, fancy clothes for evenings on the ship, camera, converters, books, touring books, airplane clothes . . . not fun!
Anyhow, Dad and I are going dancing this afternoon which I am looking forward to very much. I love dancing so much, I could happily do it every day. You'll be glad to know Dad and I haven't had a "little disagreement" over dancing in a long, long time. As a point of comparison . . . Dad says I'm better than the just-booted Susan Lucci from DWTS, so look her up as a point of comparison.
The wine tasting weekend was great - I got a little "perky" at the very first winery we stopped at - 14 tastings no less! They were very generous and it was free no less! I'm expecting to get some pictures, and will e-mail them to you when I do.
We are leaving on Friday, but will have internet access through the ship (my boss wants me to log on every couple of days to make sure I am available to answer any burning questions. :-)
Love Mom
Wow, your apartment sounds tiiiiiiny Megs. You must only be able to wash like 3 shirts at a time if you have to hang everything up to dry. I just sent you your box of goods, an e-mail to your gmail account has all the details for tracking it and all.
Vince and I went dancing Thursday night in Boulder. It was super fun! No crazy skills to show off like dad and mom, but still not too bad. Work is going good, I had 5 fulltime clients this week so I've been working lots.
Boris is doing alright. I was gone overnight so Friday when I got home he was super cuddly and needy. And then the people came and were cleaning outside and a leafblower blew leaves all over the window which scared the bejeezers out of him, he ran and hid for awhile. Then this morning he was meowing all over the place. I don't know why, he was even outside meowing! I thought maybe he was sad that all the squirrels he loves playing with weren't around, but I don't know. I cuddled some with him and then he was okay so maybe he just needed some attention. He's been cuddling with me alot in the mornings though, such a cute little cutie! I was knitting yesterday and he came and sat down right on my knitting, he's very rude like that sometimes. Well, that's all the kitty news. Love you and miss you
Kelli
Wow, look at all the Reddy woman cutting up a rug! I'm very impressed. I feel that I may need to get out there soon and start trying. This weekend was spent doing laundry and, like Kelli predicted, my entire apartment is covered with sheets, shirts, and socks hanging everywhere. But at least when I walk in it smells like Downy:)
Hey, guess what? I have a date with a sailor on Wednesday! I was kinda wary about going out with a military guy but he graduated from UCLA (in '05...I verified the info)before deciding to enlist. So on Wednesday I've got my first date in South Korea!
HI Megs - I am just now getting on this blog to read about your adventures in South Korea. Your dad helped me get to this point. Sounds like things are going well.
Love,
Aunt Sue
A date with a sailor, how fun! I cannot wait to hear how it goes. Life is good here. Vince was over yesterday and of course Boris could not be bothered to cuddle with me when there is a man around. I seriously think we may have a gay cat Megs, Boris loooooves men so much more than women. Um, not too much going on this week. I have a down week at work, actually have a reasonable amount of clients this week which is nice. Still studying every morning and knitting at night. Making lots of progress on my projects and I just found some yarn I bought ages ago last night. It was like brand new yarn that I had never used! Well, can you believe True Blood this week? I cannot believe Sam is a shapeshifter- you almost got it right with calling him a werewolf. Well, hope your week is good, have fun on your date and miss you lots
Love,
Kelli
Oh man, Kelli I know!!! True Blood's been awesome. Hey, do you recognize that guy Terry, the Iraq war vet? It was bugging me, so I IMDB'd him and he's Zach from Gilmore Girls, Lane's husband!
Well we are very accepting cat parents, so if our cat makes the conscious decision to prefer men over women than we should allow him the freedom to do so. Because he's still the cutest cat that ever was! How are those other two animals of yours, have they gotten into any mischief lately?
Hi Megan Teacher,
Oh yeah, he was Zach on GG! I hadn't really been paying him much attention, but now that you've said it, I totally see it. wow, weird to see him in a dark, and violent tv show.
Yes, I am okay with our cat being gay, makes sense really. Right now he is sprawled out on the futon taking full advantage of having it to himself. He has taken to walking over me in the early morning hours now. Not sure if its his way of asserting dominance over his women or he's trying to wake me.
Haydn and Hurley are doing good, not too much mischief. Well, unless you don't count yesterday. So I guess Vince took them on a walk to the dog park. And once there Hurley stole a squishy ball from another dog and wouldn't give it back. And when I say he wouldn't give it back, I mean that Vince was chasing him all over the dog park and Hurley ran into the pond and stood there, refusing to come in when vince called him. Hahaha, you gotta love those dogs. Oh and we were walking them this weekend at dusk and they went nuts when they saw this huge deer. Seriously, we were yanking at their leashes and they just kept lunging at the deer, trying to go say hi to a new best friend.
Your dress showed up a couple of days ago. Well, i'm assuming its your dress. I didn't open the box, I just put it up in the closet till you get back. How's the afghan coming along? Make any progress? How's your 2nd week of teaching by yourself? Love you and miss you
Kelli
